easy ways to say "Adios!" to sugar

Cutting back on sugar may seem overwhelming, so here are some ways to kick that habit to the curb without feeling deprived!

 *Canned fruit:

Fruit is sweet enough on it's own so there's no need to keep it in the sugar laden syrup. Place a strainer in your kitchen sink and pour the can into it. Give the fruit a good rinse to get rid of any excess syrup.

*Buy "No Sugar Added" when available:

Some foods, like spaghetti sauce and salad dressing, can contain unnecessary sugars. Many brands offer a "no sugar added" option so that you can easily cut back without sacrificing your favorite foods.

*Check for smaller sizes:

Sometimes great things come in small packages! I tried these for the first time on a road trip a few weeks ago and it was love at first bite. The best part is that there is only 1 gram of sugar in the whole pack! Eating healthy is more popular than ever which means a lot of companies are seeking to make good products without the cost of excess sugar and salt. Another bonus to smaller packs is that you're less likely to overindulge and eat more sugar than you planned.

*Take caution when it comes to juice:
I know, I know, this stuff is delicious. And it's also drowning in sugar. It's true some of that does come from the fruit so you could argue it's "natural sugar", but most companies add refined or processed sugar to it without hesitation. ALWAYS read the nutrition label! When in doubt..drink water.

*Soda is not your friend:

If you're looking to gain weight, feel gross, and get caffeine all in one shot, here's your chance! Soda is caffeinated sugar no matter how you look at it. Diet? Forget it. This little can will not be doing you any favors, because with all the sugars and caffeine you're sure to get addicted and keep coming back for more. Cutting soda out of your life is one of the best ways to get rid of excess sugars in your diet. C'mon be brave! You can do it! Detox IMMEDIATELY!

  1. Honeycrisp apples are about as sweet as it gets when it comes to natural sugar. That has been my go-to snack when I get a sugar craving. I've always stayed away from juice but I do drink diet soda. I try to drink it as a treat, like last night when I was at a party and everyone was wolfing down desserts I just had a diet Coke with sugar-free vanilla syrup. It was really yummy!

  2. In the summer, frozen fruit is a great alternative to sugary popsicles. Frozen grapes are great bite-size snacks, or puree and freeze other fruits to make your own pops.

  3. For those people who love bacon, Albertson's and Costco's "Kirkland" brand have a reduced fat bacon that contains very little sugar and still tastes great. Also for those people like me who love salad dressing, "Maries" creamy ranch only has 1 gram of sugar per serving. I agree with April that Soda is bad news all the way around. Diet soda is even worse for you than regular.
Don't opt for the artificial sugar that is found in so many products. There is a product called" Stevia" that makes a great all natural sugar substitute. It comes from a plant and is completely healthy for you. Use the liquid Stevia as it is all natural.

  4. April, I love reading your blog. It is very inspiring. I have been wanting to quit sugar for awhile, but I just don't ever do it. There's always a reason not to. The holidays are coming, etc, etc...You have almost got me convinced to throw away all the sugar in the house...and there is a lot of it!

You're doing awesome, keep it up and keep updating so I can work up my courage!

  5. I often use unsweetened apple juice or honey. I know honey is sweet but we get it straight from the bee farmer and I consider it quite healthy
